Second Annual Report

Dear Fellow Members:

It has been a long time since many of us have sat down together to write literature. Time and
distance can create real and imagined grievances that can divide us and block our progress. We as
a Board can pull together to minimize these problems. Many things have come up and I have tried
to touch on them all in this report. Parts of this year’s report are based on the 1997  report. It has
come to our attention and the Board has committed to remove any conflicting language from this
material. The conflicts are the result of the material coming from different time frames and
different members. By getting our project back on one page, we can begin afresh.

We need your help to do this. Two new utilities located on our NAWOL website are not only
innovative, they are the realization of a dream. Now, members from all over the world can come
together and work on the NA Way of Life book without particular computer skills or even
internet access. One is for members who read the Way of Life and want to make input. It is called
the NAWOL QUEST. Members may also ask questions and leave notes to one another.

The second is for our board to be able to enjoy internal communications. While I can’t imagine
anyone on our Board complaining if the contents of the board members forum are shared, it is
important that we have a way to communicate without the long distance bills and where all other
board members can read the input within the context of the Board. Printouts and downloads from
this area can be freely given to anyone.  The working name for this forum is ‘board members’ but
surely we can come up with a better one.

Our purpose on the NA Foundation Board is two fold:

1) to extend the opportunity to participate in the writing to as many members as  possible

2) to protect the exact wording of the form in which the Fellowship finalizes the writing.

Concerned service boards and committee members are cordially invited to participate openly in
the process with the understanding that it is the members of N.A. who have final say as to what
material is included and how it is expressed.  Once the work is finalized, it will become an
enduring form of literature. We don’t want to see it become the focus of alteration,
reconstruction, or legal entanglements. Even with a fine final piece, it will likely be years or
decades before readers can fully appreciate the depth and beauty of our combined love, gratitude
and devotion to our way of life. Other pieces may be written along similar lines and replace the
work but the NA Way of Life will stand as a literary piece on its own.  While this may eventually
subject it to cultural limitations and language that will gradually become dated, it will also give
tomorrow's readership an opportunity to read the real message of gratitude and hope that is
holding the Fellowship together in today's world.

I want to encourage you to pray, dream and express ourselves in writing as to your thoughts
about the Foundation.  A report based on your response to this request that will include all or
most of your input.  Input not in the main report will accompany the report.  To realize what is in
your hearts, you must write it down and send it in for consideration.   The phrase “complete
creative freedom” from our early literature may best describe our hopes for the Foundation. Newsletter

I made a commitment to do a monthly newsletter to members of the Board of Directors. This will
not be a “closed” newsletter, make and pass on copies to whomever, but we will only mail it to
those who are directors or have made special arrangements. Please let me have any input you
would like to communicate with other well in advance, otherwise it will appear in the next issue.
Please give me your thoughts as to what it should be called. We will continue to put out the Chronicals to the general list of interested members. The new newsletter will just be for the NA Foundation.

nawol.org

By now you should all know we bought a domain for our project at the www address nawol.org.
Further, we now have a free open forum provisionally named QUEST to allow any member in the
world to comtribute to a topic, open a new topic, download a topic, or whatever. Even further,
we have another forum without a name located at the bottom of the Way of Life page - just click
on the graphic under the date. Passwords are being given out the directors. You should have
yours before this letter arrives.

Moultrie Literature Conference

We have several pieces of business to report from the recent WOL conference at Moultrie,
Georgia. There was also concern about changes in the introduction to the Way of Life book. The
booklet designed to give to members interested in the work is in the place of the substituted
material. The booklet should be presented as a booklet and we will have to find the original or
develop a new introduction to the book. It is standared to have a preface giving credit to those
who helped and explaining why a book is written. A seperate introduction explains how to utilize,
use, or respond to the main body of a book and this is very important in our case. We will not
look back at how this oversight occurred, just remedy it.

Copyrights
We have deep concerns about the safety of our copyrights and in keeping with our prime goal of
protecting the work to keep it open and free to the Fellowship, we have voted to copyright the
book. This was done Tuesday after the conference.

Conflicts
Some of the materials contained in this report are said to have some conflicting language. Jeff
from Michigan will work with Kathy from Atlanta to review input from Board members and their
own review of the documents. This report will be due in ninty days. It is important that our
documents be free of defect when we incorporate, so don’t put off your review and input!

Welcome
Newly elected Charles Mercer will report on lawyers available in his area who might be willing to
help with the incorporation. Please contact Charles and give him any assistance he may need.
Also, Kathy Nance is back with the board. She has attended five conferences: Louisville, Rurual
Retreat, Aliquippa, Jonesboro and Moultrie. Her work prevented her more active involvement but
she is now going active.

Feedback
I have to do a lot of work on this and feel like last year’s report was well received but I didn’t
hear back from many of you. Call, write, email, send a passenger pigeon, but let me know what
you think! You can start with writing a brief introduction of yourself, your history with the Way
of Life and your particular range of interest to your Fellow Board members. I will include one or
more with each monthly newsletter. Ah, by monthly, I mean it may contain only the words “here it
is” but it will come out!

New Directors
Members who have been interested in or worked on the NA Way of Life will be contacted to see
where they stand and in some cases, asked to join our Board. If you have persons
interested, qualified and willing to serve, please advance your nominations now.

Bo Demoted
We unamiously voted to change my title to ‘chair’, so there goes my corporate glitz! I am no
longer ‘CEO.’ What will I have to turn over next? We are going to start a working group in
Atlanta. There is major interest among a number of long standing, experienced members and my
own stability helps. One thing we will do is a local bulletin board on the net to keep everyone
posted of changes and events.

New Chapter
We unanimously voted at Moultrie to open a new chapter in our book entitled “Living with Life
Threatening Illness” at the urging of  Dennis from  California.

Introduction
There was also concern about changes in the introduction to the Way of Life book. The booklet
designed to give to members interested in the work is in the place of the substituted material. The
booklet should be presented as a booklet and we will have to find the original or develop a new
introduction to the book. It is standared to have a preface giving credit to those who helped and
explaining why a book is written. A seperate introduction explains how to utilize, use, or respond
to the main body of a book and this is very important in our case. We will not look back at how
this oversight occurred, just remedy it. God Willing

We will find a way to include members who have to work their 12 Step in writing. Many are
apathetic, feeling their vote doesn’t count. We all know how much suffering is caused by needless
strife and conflict over business issues.  We will be most fortunate to escape these strains and
divisions within our effort. We suffer from a life threatening illness that exploits our disagreements
and is capable of upgrading a simple resentment into a major relapse.  We hope to renew their
passion for recovery by including them in this project.

While it may at times be difficult, God will help us find ways to work our Twelfth Step and
complete this writing without resorting to criticism of other N.A. members.  This is done to
maintain our spiritual focus, “We don't speak badly of others, do the work before us and look for
the positive channel.”

From an early stage of this project, I have realized that as we approach completion,
congratulatory emissaries from service organizations within the Fellowship would approach us
from a variety of angles.  We will lose some of our most talented and valiant WOL workers to the
lust for power, fame and high position. This is why it is so important to keep strong our love for
one another, our gratitude for recovery and our dedication to do God’s Will by working to
complete this wonderous message of recovery. Let’s stand by one another - and if we are not
allowed to do that, let’s stand aside for one another!

Our literature speaks of “members who play games of manipulation and control putting
themselves on the outside.” In the early years of this work, I felt that I was just doomed to walk a
seperate mile. But now I realize that God guided me past the many temptations and into a
position wherein I am totally free to do His Will and work openly with other members. Also,
other members are free to work in this way. The NA Way of Life project is a forward looking,
positive, affirming development that exists in its own right, neither manipulating others nor
attempting to control anyone - just trying to help make it better.

There is a problem with giving people something for free and that is that they usually don’t value
it. So, the people who write this book will value it and take care of it. Turning the work over to
any other group would invite rewrite. Instead of this, we say, “Let those who have something that
will help come forward and offer it in front of everybody!” Every member who writes on this
book is a building block on the NA Foundation. The NA Foundation Board serves these members
and protects their book.

I sincerely want to save you all a lot of time and tears by saying straight out that the Foundation is
established as a way of making clear our conviction, not to provide interlopers a way to
undermine it.  Bureaucracy is the enemy of self help groups because most volunteers don't
understand just how determined outside, hostile forces can be.  It takes energy to stay together.
Any cohesive, intentional group has to write out its purpose, mission and vision so that support is
clearly focused.  Let all know that we are sincere in our desire to give freely what we have
received so that it may benefit others.  We also don't want to see our work treated as trendy
self-help literature or as an item by those who have other priorities.  This is our book, our love
and our gratitude.  Long may it shine clearly through the pages you have written - and will write -
as we go forward together.

In Loving Service,

Bo Sewell
Chairman, N.A. Foundation

(mailed out to all board members with with copying encouraged. - Ed)

Please set this packet somewhere special and allow sufficient time to go over each section in its turn.  Make notes as you scrutinize the material and when you are finished, please write out your response.  Mail it to NA Foundation, 483 Moreland Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30307.    If you don't usually write stuff like this, just call (404) 525-3351 and you can marks your comments over the phone.   We are doing this to build our unity and keep faith with the participatory process.

Please review for conflicts and return in thirty days. Thanks!

Plan of Action
Written to fill the need for a comprehensive yet short statement to help everyone identify and decide if they should follow up on their interest in the project.

Official Charter, Vision, Mission, Decision Making
Please review this material and share concerns or suggestions.  It takes a certain focus to work on stuff like this.  If you are interested, please let me know and I will compose a separate mail list for our policy workers.  John B. is our P&A chair.  One item that may be of interest, we all know how klunky it feels to call each other by titles based on outside, non-spiritual organizations.  Does anyone have suggestions on how we might style our forms of address.  We have innovated by calling our supporters 'Way of Life workers'.  We could lighten the effort by having cooler titles than secretary, CEO, treasurer.  How about head cheese, scribner, and money bags?

Mail List: add names
Right now anyone on a WOL mail list may be considered a key members.  Later it may get a little cumbersome. Still, we will follow our own preference and make copies of the mail list widely available.  We have found through sad experience that where this is not done, some members (about one in ten!) will feel a sense of power over holding the mail list and refuse to share it with others.  If you ever feel an inkling of this, share it with your home group, tell us about it and get with your sponsor to alleviate the self-will before it creeps into other areas of your service.  Openness is not optional!

Proposed By-Laws
The preliminary bylaws included in this packet are intended to embed our feelings and
sentiments into something that will unify, guide and protect us in the foreseeable future.  Please
give them your careful consideration before submitting your ideas and suggestions. When you
have done this, write what is in your heart and mail it is.  We will present  a report on the
essence and particulars of your responses.

N.A. Way of Life

* PLAN OF ACTION *

Origins

Work on this book began when a member started writing on the Twelve Principles mentioned in the Twelfth Step of Narcotics Anonymous.  Other material about how addicts in N. A. cared for one another and applied the Twelve Steps of recovery to their personal and interpersonal lives began to come to him and it was added to the writing.  After a few years, the work grew longer and it was seen that much more could be added.  The opportunity of participating in the writing was extended to many members on a personal basis who responded with curiosity and spirit.  A way to conduct the work on a broad scale without resorting to structural guidance seemed most likely to ensure that the work could proceed in an open and participatory manner.  This was the crucial thing because it was felt that the writing should  reflect  the broadest possible range
of recovery experience.

Manuscript

Expanded chapters and paragraphs, new chapters, the ability to divide a chapter, combine chapters or break a chapter out into a new book was exhaustively discussed and presented to members working on the book.  This was done to maximize the creativity of the many members involved.  At one point a workshop in Maryland added five new chapters in an afternoon.
Later several other chapters were combined into one.  The reasons for doing the book in this manner is covered in the Introduction.   The manuscript was produced and distributed informally beginning in 1986 when the original fifty pages were written. Over the years many members from many places worked on it with the understanding that it would not be turned over to world service for further processing but remain a work of the members of NA in open association with one another.  A way was sought to protect the work during its creation and beyond.  Concern was expressed from the beginning that the cost of the book be kept down so it would reach more addicts. These concerns and safeguards were sought in the creation of the NA Foundation.   This brings us up to date.

The Future: the Presentation Form

To allow for many members to read and input to the work, a systematic approach is being developed.  First, each chapter will be completed to the point where it is reasonably well written, based on actual recovery experience and arranged in a useful order.  Each page will be made unique  to allow for coherent input: line 35, page 57 will be the same in all forms and printouts of the work.  Members are encouraged to make copies to avoid the need to raise major funds and create a burdensome bureaucracy.  A file system exists to hold input for processing at future literature conferences.  The input will be marked as to how it is used.  A database will show the recurrence of similar input.   A commentary will be developed to provide insight into key points within the writing.  At this stage Much of the input will be rough.

When work proceeds to a point, a Second Presentation Form may be required.  Input already on file will be weighed against new  input to prevent moving the same sentences into and out of the document. It is likely that hot spots concerning central questions will appear.  Records of how we  resolve these issues will stabilize the writing in a certain form.  Changes made in one part of the book will have  to be consistent with other parts of the book.  This will make  the processing of the 2nd Form different from the 1st Form.  It is likely that there will be more complete and well written input. Additional presentation forms will be utilized if necessary.

Final Form

Interaction among members and editors will approach the work from two viewpoints: the experience and the application.  The experience side combines accurate descriptions of recovery experience.  The reader side asks, "Can this writing help me stay clean and live a happier life?"  Reports within the movement will explain unresolved questions to members.  Additional final forms can be developed if needed.   While the book is being written, we will continue to discuss
ways to  insure the integrity of the work and keep faith with the gratitude and devotion of the members who write it.  We are devoted to our NA group purpose.  Updates will continue to be sent to N.A. World Services to preserve the  Fellowship from needless controversy.  Like much else in recovery, we have to proceed on faith that our Loving Ultimate Authority will care for
us and not see our efforts wasted.

OFFICIAL CHARTER OF THE N.A. FOUNDATION

The Foundation will exist solely as a copyright service and literature repository for the
Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous.  We gather to form a supportive development system and
to provide a sanctuary for NA literature.  Rare and important personal experiences that might
otherwise be lost and/or demean by becoming commercial product, shall be protected.  We will
do this by offering a place of safekeeping for written works that may one day become NA
literature.

The Foundation will be forever bound to limitations designed to protect the spiritual
nature and integrity of the works.  No member of the NA Foundation is allowed to gain
financially from their participation.  Anyone submitting input or original drafts to the Foundation
copyright does so with the understanding that they are releasing any and all financial claims and
control to the input.  Foundation members may receive reimbursement for duties assigned them
by the Foundation.

The Foundation shall have no opinion or position on literature not under development by
the Foundation, methods of creation, service boards or committees.  We shall strive to maintain
direct responsibility to those we serve.

We exist, as a Foundation, solely to support the efforts of those who have experienced
some sort of miracle in their lives and want to share it to benefit others.  This facilitates the
function of providing opportunities to fulfill some of our individual 9th and 12th step work,
through the written word.

You are a member of the Foundation when you say you are.  Membership responsibility
carries with it the need to maintain contact with the Foundation.  Ongoing participation with a
current project is a must.  The best of our spiritual natures is essential to the success of the
Foundation.

The identified need for this service is evident.  It's creation shall provide new avenues for
development of materials.  By providing a place of access, materials on various topics shall be
readily available to those who request it for development of current and future NA literature
projects.  This makes it possible to provide an ongoing protection for the spiritual nature of our
written message.

Unanimously approved at the NA Way of Life
Planning Conference in Louisville, Kentucky

Provisional input suggested by members.  How do you feel?

VISION STATEMENT

Our vision is an NA Way of Life - a renaissance of freedom throughout our Fellowship.
We see our members practicing principles in all areas of life and then sharing their experiences
by the written as well as spoken word.  As this process unfolds the Point of Freedom rises ever
higher as our base broadens with new members and we stay strong by the retention of our current
members.

MISSION STATEMENT
NA WAY OF LIFE PROJECT

Our mission is to produce a work of Narcotics anonymous literature which relates to the ongoing
recovery of our members.  This work is intended to share a principles based approach to the
varied life experiences which we encounter in our recovery;  those things we have learned since
the Basic Text was written.

DECISION MAKING PROCESS FOR
THE WAY OF LIFE PROJECT

Issues needing decisions in a short time frame may be made by committee.  This committee may
be selected from those members attending the June conference.  Decisions could be gathered by
telephone conference.  2/3 majority required for passage of motions.

Longer term issues may be determined by mail in ballot taken from the Chronicles Newsletter.
An article in the newsletter could address the issue pro and con.  Each person on the mailing list
would have a numbered vote.  We could accept only on vote per number.

Many of us believe that Group Conscience is the state of mind which we enter into as a result of
our surrender to the common welfare.  Some of us consider this only possible in the midst of a
group.  This being the case, some may object to the aspect of a "vote" being taken from
individuals.  It may be suggested however that a member may enter into the necessary state of
mind as  a result of a meditative reading of the issue and a prayerful asking for guidance.
Suggestion that members take a moment of quiet to enter the group conscience state of mind
before casting their votes could be included in the articles.

N.A. Foundation Proposed By-Laws

The following are the rules governing the general convention of the N A Foundation.

Article I.  Name

Section 1.   That the NA Foundation (hereafter called the Foundation) exists to serve the
stated goals of the Fellowship of NA and conducts its actions and policies in accord with the
Twelve Traditions of Narcotics Anonymous.  The Foundation is a gathering of people who
applaud and support through positive actions the Twelve Steps of Narcotics Anonymous.

Section 2.   After the N.A. Way of Life book is done, the Foundation may undertake other
NA supportive works such as researching archives and presenting the  results to various service
boards or committees.

Article II.  Purpose

Section 1.    The main purpose of the Foundation is to hold the copyrights to the NA Way
of Life book.  While all members and service branches are invited to attend conferences,
participate in the writing and input to the work, none may change the basic nature of the work
which three fold:  1) that the finalization writing occur in open, participatory conferences, 2)  that
the work be held in perpetuity by members who have helped with the writing and 3) that faith be
kept with the open, loving nature of the work. A prime concern is that the book will not be
changed after the Fellowship is done working on it. Furthermore, we see the need to protect the
wisdom and love invested in the work from processes involving members elected on a year to
year basis and employees of our world service organization who may be lured into conflicts of
interest.

Section 2.   To act as repository for written works, archives and other materials in media
audio, video and computer files for the Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous.

Section 3.     Further, the Foundation will act as a repository of individual archives from
NA members who either pass on or wish to make the materials available to other members
through the Foundation.

Article III.  Membership

     Section 1. Eligibility and Acceptance
  a.  Members shall be drawn from the general membership of Narcotics Anonymous and all
shall be welcome with the understanding that the member supports open participatory
writing process and the principles and Traditions of Narcotics Anonymous.  While all are
welcome  to the Foundation, membership entails agreement with and commitment to the
goals and policies of the Foundation.

     Section 2.  Removal from Membership

          a.  Relapse and non-participation require curtailment of membership in the
Foundation. However, the member is welcome to rejoin the Foundation at a later date unless
other matters resulted in removal from membership.

          b. For going against the open, participatory nature of the work or otherwise
conflicting with Article II, section 1.  While it is hoped that this will never be acted on, we are
firm in our purpose and will act to protect our belief within our own organization.

Article IV.  Meetings

Section 1.  Official business meeting will be announced at least thirty days in advance and
will be held separately from Way of Life workshops and conferences to preclude discussion of
business matters at the conferences.  Updates and presentations may be conducted as needed.

Article V.   Directors

Section 1. Board of Directors meet periodically and stay  in contact to implement policy
and procedures formulated by group conscience within  the Foundation.  This group conscience
can be accessed through communication with the working groups of the Way of Life.

Section 2. The Purpose of the N.A. F. Board of Directors  should be to provide a forum of
collecting information and maintaining correspondence to WOL working groups and members.
The Board will maintain the integrity of  the WOL effort by providing guidance through 12 Steps
and 12 Traditions of  NA  as  represented in the Way of Life Book.

Article VI.  Committees

Section 1.  Committees responsible and accountable to the N.A. Foundation within the
Twelve Traditions may be formed and dissolved as needed to complete the aims and objectives
of the Foundation.

Article VII.  Fiscal Year
Section 1.  The fiscal year shall be from July 1 to June 31 each year.

Article VIII. Annual Meetings
Section 1.  The annual meeting of the NA Foundation will be in the month of October of
each year.

[March 20, 1997 - The following letter to go out in response to enquiry from members viewing nawol.org webpage.] N. A. Way of Life Web

Welcome Sheet
(WWS)

"it starts with an open mind..."

Dear Fellow Members,

Welcome to the N.A. Way of Life project!  We are loyal, loving NA members who want to share
about recovery through writing.  We have been guided into a pathway that allows us to write a
new recovery text. Here's how it works.  Members read the existing material, write out their ideas
and send them in through the email address on the Website.  The material is placed in folders for
review and possible inclusion at the next literature conference.  All material will be considered and
even if several pieces say the same thing, it only validates the other input.  As we go along, the
files will be constantly combed to locate material that fits in somewhere.  We are all in this
together.  While all are welcomed to participate in the process, we are not open to changing the
process. We believe the openness and opportunity to participate allows our Ultimate Authority to
speak to us through the writing.  We believe the open, participatory nature of the work is as
important to the Fellowship and the resulting, completed work.

All are invited to participate from a day clean to forty years.  Many of us have years of service
experience in NA literature.  Most, if not all, of us support the structural efforts to develop new
literature.  It has just dawned on us that we are members of a free Fellowship of addicts and that
the doorway to this work has never been closed to us.  We have found it futile to complain and
criticize when we could be writing.  Many  writers are driven by a deep inner desire to make
things right and so are we.  The strength of our experience is enough to justify and explain what
we are doing to any interested party.  From long personal experience, we know our currently
approved service guides have always allowed addicts to contribute to our N.A. common welfare
through writing.  Check it out.

We utilize the NA Way of Life Chronicle to communicate our ideas, our progress and our
upcoming events.  To preclude the necessity of costly elections and fundraising procedures, we
send out a hundred copies to trusted members who have agreed to make ten copies and mail them
out to other members so that from an original mailing of 100, we can hope to reach 1000 and
from that group of mailings another group of 10,000 at no greater cost than a hamburger lunch.
Plans are being discussed to utilize a system of email addresses with land mail to reach more
members.  We pretty much want to encourage you to focus on the quality of a particular chapter
along with some friends locally and stay in touch with the leadership of the movement.
Communication with other members working on the project is good too but should not take
precedence over WRITING down your ideas, suggestions and concerns.  Primarily, we ask you to
pray and meditate on the fact that along with an enormous number of newcomers, we have more
members who have been in recovery long enough to have achieved their Twelfth Step.  We know
these members exist and want to give them every encouragement to get involved with this project.
If you know of someone with over ten years clean, you may want to pass a copy of this Way of
Life Welcome Sheet to them.

*Chronicles*

Our need for communications is routinely met by a publication we created a few years ago.  It is periodical in nature to allow for extra issues if we get busy or fewer in a reflective period.  Contents are selected somewhat informally and we hope it will cut down on rumors and help us all stay on the same 'page'.  Jeff B. from the Rockford Working Group has helped us with this from its inception.  Thanks Jeff!

*QUEST*

Something new in 1998, we have an open forum at our nawol.org website. Go to the home page and scroll down until you see the reference to the QUEST. Click on it and go over the entries until you see one that triggers something, click on it and it goes up on the page. Please help make this a successful working tool for members who can now access an input process from any friends house, any library, any where they can get to our page. The input will be accumulated and  periodically trimmed with the material considered at subsequent literature conferences. Remember, the world wide web lets the whole world participate right now. We may have to inovate in the coming year if traffic requires.
