Dick Hitt, Attorney

Dear Dick,

It was great to chat with you the other day. Look forward to another visit up your way soon. When we spoke a few years ago about incorporating the NA Foundation, you advised me that the NA WSO would file a lawsuit against us immediately and for that reason, we dropped the issue of filing for a time. Now, some members are asking if we incorporated. I conveyed to them your response, now I need it in writing just to let them know I acted in good faith and tried to get the incorporation.

Also later during the same month, you told me that I should copyright the book in my name to hold in trust until the corporation was formed. We have had several changes lately in our world service structure and I believe there are several members on the board who want to turn the book over to world services. They are inflamed that I copyrighted the book to protect it as a housekeeping routine.

I have tried to tell them that my holding the copyrights does nothing to change things because as originating author I hold copyrights anyway. A brief, simple statement from you on this would help me present all the facts clearly to my board. One or two board members are calling around telling people that my copyrighting the book makes it a personal project and not a Fellowship project.

Thanks for your help and friendship over the years.

In Loving Service,

Bo S. Chairman, NA Foundation

NA Foundation

Dear Bo,

Thank you for your letter of May 22, 1998.

At the time that we talked about what was best to do to maintain harmony with NA WSO. It was clear that your intent was to maintain harmony with the national organization in the best interest of recovery for all of us.

I advised you not to incorporate as a foundation, for it could be for it could be interpreted as a hostile act to NA WSO.

It is true that I advised you to copyright work of the group as to the book. I certainly hope that harmony will prevail and sound voices of moderation and cooperation will head off any difficulty.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Richard D. Hitt, Attorney at Law

Thank you for taking the time to share this information with those of us who have only recently become involved with the WOL project. It is helpful to have some sources and information on which to base choices during this "crisis in a teapot". As is probably true with all addicts, I tend to get in trouble if I don't process all sides of an issue and operate entirely from an emotional vantage point.

It is sad that the forces that could destroy us are apparently sustained through unbridled emotion and an unwillingness to ask questions. I agree that it appears much easier to have someone that we admire and respect feed us information/misinformation that influences our actions. I wonder if those individuals are willing to take the consequences of the actions that we may choose to take, behind their information alone. I DOUBT IT! It has been my experience that if there is an 'ass-whipping' in the process - It's usually only mine.

I believe that the only one who can "lose or win" in this situation is the addict who is still suffering. We will WIN if the project is put back on track. We will LOSE if individuals continue to exert their personal agendas.

Thank you for having the strength and courage to do what you believe to be 'right'. It is sometimes a very uncomfortable and lonely place to place yourself. As for myself, I thank you for choosing the N.A. way of life and preparing the way to recovery for me. It is my fondest wish that God will allow me to play some small part in helping others on their journey through this project.

I pray that God will send his guidance to those who are apparently not okay with what has occurred so that WE can all get back to the important issues.

ILS,

Gayle H., Georgia
