Our history is one of struggle. From the first time an addict introduced himself or herself as an addict in whatever fellowship, there has been contraversy. Our fellowship was adapted from the format followed by another fellowship, but they didn't give us a damn thing! There was not a grandfatherly like relationship at all. The truth be known about that entire situation, they were in contact with their WSO trying to find a way to keep us out. We were shunned then because of our problem, not helped because we were trying to do something about it. Our meetings were driven underground for a lot of differant reasons, the foremost being FEAR. Early members were being judged and ridiculed as the dredges of society, and some were even arrested for trying to establish or conduct a meeting simply because they were DRUG addicts. They however pressed forward, guided by the God of their understanding, to establish what has evolved into N.A. as we know it today. Their hard-won experience gave birth to the traditions, which are supposed to keep our fellowship alive and free. It has been my experience that these principles don't mean shit to most of us today! The first tradition says so much that most of us really don't take the time to look at it on a deeper level. Unity is the key to the whole process, and there are only two sides to unity, the solution side or the contraversial side. I am so grateful for the education I recieved when I got here. It is my understanding that God works through people, making this a God given program, yet many of us still want to jump in the drivers seat. We talk about trust, but do we really do it? Who's the only one we can really trust? When all is said and done, its really about sticking to the basics layed down by our predecessors, leaving as much of our personalities out as is humanly possible. Our history has been eleven steps to help us to learn about ourselves and the disease of addiction, with a twelth step to help us carry on our history, which is also our message.HOPE!!!
