This is certainly a most interesting topic to me. I had the priviledge to attend my first service-oriented convention earlier this year. I heard a speaker share about all the times that he had suffered through some abusive debates during which the abusers were "expounding upon the spiritual principles of recovery". The moral, very briefly, was that most times it it still only one's personal perception and experience with the principles rather than a true spiritual principle anyway.
I recall my first personal experience with this strange situation. There was an individual who would go into tirades about the principles and would even quote from our literature to prove their point, so to speak. I considered myself quite knowledgeable about our literature at the time and began to research some of the other person's quotes in an effort to more effectively debate the issues. (Sound familiar?) As I found a quote, I could find a quote on the same page and sometimes within the same paragraph that could support a counter-arguement. Somewhere in the process, it occured to me that there was room for everyone to have a viewpoint.
When we can discuss and Yes, even disagree - while attempting to not become disagreeable - we can all grow in understanding and perspective but most of all in love and patience. Someone told me when I first got here that I needed to learn how to let others be right but more importantly I needed to learn to allow others to be wrong as well because until I did I would never have these rights for myself.
In Loving Service, Gayle H.
