Dear Salahuddin,
Many of the problems we face in NA stem from the fact that we had a situation in the US where the number of treatment facilities and institutions reached a saturation point and we did most of our Twelve Stepping on newcomers who came through a treatment center of some sort. I came directly into the meetings and was never in treatment. Since first impressions are lasting, many of us got our first impressions in treatment or from members who came in through treatment. The 'anniversary' part of the NA program has never gotten much official recognition. Respecting your sincerity prompts me to address your questions.
The Aniversary is our chance to say 'thank you' to the people who have helped us stay clean through the year (s). It is noticeable that the cake adds an air of celebration and joy to the occasion. It makes a big deal out of our clean time. Many groups allow members to have in a special speaker, the refreshments, and someone special to give out their medallion. The person getting the attention feels good and has a special moment to 'tell us how you did it.' Newcomers hear this. Other members hear this and we get to hear it ourselves. It is our 'rite of passage.'
The customs change occasionally. In my metro area, members often give their glow or black chip to a newcomer who has a white chip in their other hand, as an act of support and caring.
So, while we get the chip or medallion, they get the cake and we get to share our gratitude with those who help us.
In Loving Fellowship,
Bo S.
