My old sponsor, Chuck S. spent a lot of time inside. He said he would tell people, if you hate jail so much, why do you keep doing things that get you into jail.
My personal best story on the spirit of imates living the NA program is from Buford prison. We were working on the Basic Text and gave one of the Grey Review forms from Memphis to the inmates to read and input to the book. Whoever was doing the meetings there dropped out or fulfilled their commitment and were not replaced. No meetings were held at Buford Prison for two years. By then, the Basic Text was done and members once again rallied to get the message to those behind bars. When they contacted the warden, they were told ok but there was an NA meeting taking place on a weekly basis. It turned out that the inmates used the Grey Form for those two years with no outside support.
When I went on the Board of Trustees in 1984, I expected that at least part of our time would be devoted to meeting with leaders of industry, the media, the military and prison systems. It seems I was wrong but it still seems like something we are supposed to do. They need to know we exist and that we are ok to deal with, that we are serious about our recovery and helping others. We have and excellent start on a chapter about H&I called Bitter Ends - New Beginnings. Check it out. Thanks for posting.
Also, I always thought inmates should be involved with the process because they do have time for it!
Lovin' Service,
Bo S.
