There are some meetings within my area that have what they call 'the clarity statement'. A motion to adopt an "official" clarity statement was made on the CAR in the past few years - this motion was not adopted by the Fellowship.

My home group is in a small town and we have struggled with the confusion that seems to be common where other fellowships are strong. We have tried various means and methods to ensure the CLARITY of the NA Message. We are currently taking the approach of explaining why we identify ourselves as addicts and ask for respect of our choice - NOT to dictate to anyone else who or what they are.

Our 'clarity statement' is taken directly from the Basic Text. WE IDENTIFY OURSELVES SIMPLY AS AN ADDICT. OUR IDENTIFICATION AS ADDICTS IS ALL-INCLUSIVE WITH RESPECT TO ANY MOOD-CHANGING, MIND-ALTERING SUBSTANCE. OUR PROBLEM IS NOT A SPECIFIC SUBSTANCE, IT IS A DISEASE CALLED ADDICTION.

I hope this wil help you and others who are still struggling to maintain their NA identy.

In Loving Service,

Gayle
