Sounds like you got your feet planted on the right road, anyway. I think a lot of recovery just comes to us if we have our feet planted in recovery, walking the NA recovery road. I have initiated recovery with someone new by saying something like, "You don't feel like using right now, do you? That's because you're in this setting and we don't use. Now, stay here a while, and this will become your ordinary state of mind. People who get loaded, have to get away from this relaxed, open, caring, state of mind. Contact with others helps all sorts of ways. We get examples of what to do, not to do, and specific feedback on what happens when we do. This has a way of affecting our choices. Remember, you are living in the 'grace of God' right now. There will come a time when you have to put all you have learned to the test. There will be no mental defense against the next usage and all you will have is your spirit to protect you.
Your earnestness speaks well of your desire for recovery.
