I�ve read elsewhere that, back in the days before widespread literacy, the moon was originally a symbol put on the door of the women�s outhouse, with a sunburst reserved for the men�s outhouse. For some reason, the crescent moon stuck in cases where a single outhouse was in use. Probably, this is because it provided a touch more privacy than a full sunburst and was easier to cut out than a full sunburst.
